FAU CAPS HISTORIC SEASON AT CPT NATIONALS

The biggest tournament of the season delivered on every level—unmatched intensity, elite depth, and championship-level drama. From early heartbreak to championship glory, CPT Nationals showcased the very best of collegiate pickleball.

šŸŽ¾ Friday: Pool Play Sets the Stage

Teams opened Nationals in round-robin pool play, competing in groups of four to earn their seeding for the elimination bracket. Every match mattered, with positioning critical for the long road ahead.

šŸ”„ Saturday: Survive and Advance

Round of 64 – The Heartbreak Round
This is where dreams are tested. After months of travel, grinding through regionals, and countless hours of preparation, teams face the reality of single elimination. One loss—and it’s over. No second chances. Even with consolation play, this is the toughest exit of the tournament.

Round of 32 – The Contenders Emerge
The level rises. The remaining 32 teams are all capable of making a run, and weaknesses are exposed quickly. The intensity ramps up, and the margin for error disappears.

Round of 16 – The Nation’s Best
At this stage, only elite programs remain—teams that have proven themselves all season long.
šŸ‘ Shoutout to all teams reaching this round:

Purdue, JMU, Liberty, Ohio State, FSU, GCU, Alabama, UT Austin

  • BYU — biggest surprise of the tournament
  • Utah Tech
  • Florida
  • FAU
  • Wisconsin
  • Utah Valley
  • Indiana

šŸ’„ Semifinals

Utah Tech def. UNC (3-0)
The UNC crowd brought the energy, and Leng & Teterina pushed the Boydstons to the limit—but Utah Tech’s experience proved decisive in a clean sweep.

FAU def. UVU (3-0)
FAU controlled the match from the start. Dominant gender doubles set the tone, and despite an early lead from UVU in mixed, FAU’s consistency and discipline sealed the sweep.

šŸ† Championship Match: FAU vs Utah Tech

In a match defined by razor-thin margins and relentless pressure, FAU proved they could execute when it mattered most. An epic final between two powerhouse programs, featuring elite lineups on both sides:

FAU (Team DUPR: 21.937)
Jayden Broderick • Alec Lamacchio • Bella Nelson • Ava Cavataio

Utah Tech (Team DUPR: 21.641)
Clayton Boydston • Liam Duffin • Ella Boydston • Lauren Mercado

  • Women’s Doubles: FAU jumps out early, nearly lets it slip, but closes it out 21-19
  • Men’s Doubles: Deadlocked at 20-20, Utah Tech errors at the net give FAU the edge
  • Mixed Doubles 1: A back-and-forth battle, but the Boydstons grind out a 21-19 win
  • Mixed Doubles 2: FAU’s Jayden & Ava stay steady and overpower Liam & Lauren to clinch the title

⭐ Standout Performances

It would be impossible not to recognize the entire FAU squad for their dominance throughout the weekend. From start to finish, they were rock solid—focused, disciplined, and determined to finish the job. And they did. Every player stepped up when it mattered most, proving why they are the National Champions.

But one of the most memorable —and defining—performances came on the other side of the net.

Clayton and Ella Boydston (Utah Tech) delivered a statement moment in the Finals, taking down Ava Cavataio and Alec Lamacchio in a high-level mixed doubles battle. It was more than just a win—it was a reflection of their entire season. The growth, the adjustments, the resilience—they brought it all to the biggest stage.

In that match, they showed exactly what makes collegiate pickleball so special: elite skill, relentless effort, and heart that never backs down.

šŸŽÆ Key Takeaways

Ā The Biggest Nationals Yet
CPT didn’t just host Nationals—they delivered the biggest one yet. Bigger than last year, bigger than any other tour’s championship, and a true finale to the collegiate season. And with eligibility rules evolving, the big question remains: will the same powerhouse teams return next year?

That uncertainty is exactly what makes college pickleball so exciting—nothing stays the same.

College Pickleball Isn’t ā€œNextā€ā€”It’s NOW
While much of the pickleball world focuses on the pro game and international growth, something special is happening right here in the college space. College pickleball isn’t the next big thing—it’s the current big thing. The depth of talent, level of competition, and rapid expansion across the country prove that this is where the energy and momentum are building in real time.

More Opportunities, More Growth
The addition of a second 32-team bracket was a major win. The talent pool is growing fast, and more teams are stepping up ready to compete. Creating more opportunities at Nationals is a clear sign of just how deep collegiate pickleball has become.

A Sector of the Sport Organically Drawing Spectators
The production level continues to rise, and with it, the spectator experience. What started with parents, friends, and coaches in the stands is evolving into something bigger.

Looking ahead, this becomes a sport where fans show up to support their alma mater or favorite school—bringing rivalries, school pride, and energy that can take collegiate pickleball to another level.
