🔥 High Voltage Weekend at the Selkirk APP Collegiate Qualifier – Arizona 🔥

This weekend’s Selkirk APP Collegiate Qualifier in Arizona was pure energy — high voltage from start to finish. Top collegiate programs from across the country came ready to compete, and compete they did!

For weeks, the big question in the collegiate pickleball community has been: Can Utah Tech be beat?

The answer? Yes — by Utah Tech.

Unfortunately, it can be lackluster for fans and players when it is two Utah Tech teams who battle it out in the finals and take home the majority of prize money. While it’s always tough when same-school teams have to face each other (usually happens earlier in the bracket), it’s possible that an “upset” still happened.

On paper, Utah Tech White — featuring Lauren Mercado, Liam Duffinin, Ella Boydston, and Clayton Boydston — may have been favored to win. But it was Utah Tech Red — Ashlee Peterson, Benson Parry, Mary Monson, and Payton Weber — who rose to the occasion. After capturing both Gender Doubles (Men’s and Women’s), Utah Tech Red dropped both Mixed Doubles matches, setting up a decisive tiebreaker. They left no doubt, closing it out with a commanding 21–13 victory.

⭐ Standout Performances

  • Benson Parry (Utah Tech): showed up this weekend with extra swagger — and the game to back it up. He looked like a man on a mission, determined not to be denied. After securing the W in Men’s Dubs, Parry came through again in the finals tiebreaker, stealing crucial points from Liam Duffin in singles to secure the title for Utah Tech Red.
  • Mary Monson (Utah Tech): We’ve already sung Mary Monson’s praises before, so we’ll keep it brief — but let’s just say if she ever decides to go pro, we’re behind her 100%. Consider this fair warning to the women’s pro circuit: Mary Monson is the real deal. After multiple wins against every top collegiate team, she’s making a strong case as the most dominant female player in Collegiate Pickleball right now.
  • Ray Heinonen and Matthew Zou (UCSD): Ray and Matthew brought their A-game in the semifinals, taking down the Utah Tech White team in Men’s Doubles. It wasn’t just that match — they were locked in all weekend, delivering their best performances when it mattered most.

🎯 Key Takeaways

Nobody can deny that the level of competition in collegiate pickleball is rising fast. Those “easy wins” that used to be the norm? They’re gone. Now, whether your team is facing Purdue, GCU, ASU, the University of Hawaii, SDSU, or any other program that shows up — you’re in for a battle.

With rally scoring, anything can happen, and every point matters. Programs are getting deeper too — many schools are bringing two, three or even four teams, and the talent doesn’t stop with the top squad. Every team comes ready to play.

The future of collegiate pickleball is shining bright — and this is just the beginning.
